Simple Steps To Become An Uber Eats Driver

You have most likely heard of Uber. Uber started out as a rideshare service but it is no longer limited to just rides anymore. They now make deliveries with their app Uber Eats. They are after all the largest ride-sharing company in the world.

Uber was founded in 2009. Since then, it has grown to be a huge multinational company with thousands of employees. Uber’s emergence was the beginning of a revolution in the transportation space. The ride-sharing giant has expanded its portfolio over the years to include other value-added services. These are different from its core ride-sharing offering. One of them is Uber Eats.

How can one become an Uber Eats Driver? This will be discussed in detail in a bit. But first, a little background on Uber Eats.

What Is Uber Eats?

Uber Eats is an app that allows you to order food from different restaurants in your locality. You make orders from your phone and it is delivered to your doorstep or anywhere else you want it. It is a fast and affordable service.

In this digital age, people prefer to get things delivered to them instead of going to get them, for various reasons. Uber Eats is simply a robust delivery system for food. Let’s say you are home and craving dumplings from your favorite Chinese restaurant. You do not want to go to the restaurant physically and they do not offer home delivery. All you need to do is sign up on Uber eats, put in your restaurant of choice, order and Uber eats brings the food to your house for a fee.

Uber Eats was launched in 2014. It is already a major competitor for other companies that have been in the space for years. This includes Postmates and DoorDash. Uber Eats had up to $6 billion in deliveries last year! That’s huge for a newcomer. Uber Eats drivers work the same way as traditional Uber drivers. They get to work on their own terms, make their own schedules and work whenever it suits them. If you want to work as a driver in the food delivery business, Uber Eats provides a great opportunity for you. After all, it is becoming one of the industry leaders in the food delivery sector.

Before You Join Uber Eats As A Driver

Are you considering driving for a food delivery service? If so, there are important questions you need to ask yourself to determine if this is really what you can do. One of such is: are you a people person? There is a possibility that you will be dealing with belligerent or rude customers. Do you think you can handle such situations calmly? How good is your communication skills?

You will also need to spend several hours behind the wheel. Do you think that’s something you want to do? Having honest answers to these questions will save you a lot of headaches down the line. Now, before going into detailed steps on what to do to become an Uber Eats driver, there is something important that needs to be explained. What exactly does an Uber Eats driver do? How does the entire delivery process work?

What Exactly Do Uber Eats Drivers Do?

Uber Eats drivers pick up food orders from a restaurant and deliver to the customer. The food could either be delivered to the customer’s doorstep or the customer can come to collect it at the curbside. One important thing to note is that Uber Eats Drivers do not actually carry cash, like regular delivery drivers. All payments happen on the app.

Uber Eats is also a very flexible delivery service. Most times, cars are the only transportation needed to deliver food. But sometimes, bikes are needed, or even delivery on foot. This depends on the transportation system in the city and traffic conditions. Driving for Uber Eats works the same way as driving for Uber. Drivers log in to the app and sit around waiting for an order. When one comes through, you accept and proceed to the restaurant to pick up the order. Then you drive to the customer’s house to drop it off. In fact, a lot of Uber Eats Drivers also drive for Uber. It is just a matter of switching apps and what is being carried.

How Does An Uber Eats Driver Earn Money?

An Uber Eats Driver earns money in three ways for each ride. There is a pick-up fee, which is for picking the food up from the restaurant. There is a “distance traveled” fee which is like traditional Uber. This amount is calculated based on the distance traveled from the restaurant to the customer’s house. The part of town, traffic and the type of vehicle the driver is using can also be factored into the amount. There is also a drop off fee which is for delivering the food to the customer.

All these charges contribute to the base Uber Eats driver delivery fee per order. Of course, other factors can also increase this base price. One of these factors is the boost fee. Like the surge fee in traditional Uber, the prices for delivery goes up during some periods of high demand during the day. These times are usually during dinner time or late at night. It is also important to note that these fees tend to turn up more often during the weekends or public holidays.

A second factor that could increase your earnings as an Uber Eats driver is the Extra Order Fee. This is an increased fee paid by the customer for multiple orders in one run. Say for instance the customer requests for 3 orders of burgers and fries. He or she pays extra and the Uber Eats Driver also earns extra.

You can also get increased earning as an Uber Eats driver from Uber Eats tips. A customer has the option of tipping an Uber Eats Driver if they so wish. The tips could be done through the app or directly by giving cash at the point of delivery. Uber usually keeps 25% of every delivery fee the customer is charged, but they do not touch the driver’s tips.

If you are thinking of becoming an Uber Eats driver, being courteous to the customers could earn you more money through tips. You could carry extra water bottles with you or extra sauce and salad dressing. The customer is likely to find that impressive and tip more. Make sure they know those extra things are from you though.

How Much Does An Uber Eats Driver Make?

Uber Eats drivers earn money for every delivery they complete. That is for every food delivery they pick up and deliver successfully. An Uber eats driver typically earns between 8 and 18 dollars per hour. Of course, there is a variation in how much each driver can earn, depending on some factors.

To earn more, you should consider working during rush hour periods. These are the lunch and dinner rush hours. Additionally, during these periods, there is a higher likelihood of boost fees, which adds to your earnings.

How To Become An Uber Eats Driver

Now you are ready to become an Uber Eats driver. But what do you have to do to get signed up? First things first, make sure that Uber Eats operates in your city. You can check the Uber Eats website to find out which cities they are operating in. The next step is to make sure you meet both the driver and vehicle requirements

  • Uber Eats Driver Requirements

To drive for Uber Eats, the first requirement is that the driver must be at least 19 years old. Except if the delivery option is by bike or on foot, then the driver can be 18 years old.

Also, you must have had your license for at least a year before being allowed to drive for Uber Eats. A valid driver’s license, current vehicle registration and proof of insurance with your name on it are needed. Uber Eats needs these from you before they accept you to work on their platform.

You also need to be able to carry at least 30 pounds of cargo (food) in your vehicle. Of course, most of the deliveries you will carry will be less than that. But Uber Eats wants to be sure that if the occasion calls for it, their drivers can carry more.

There is one final individual hurdle to jump in your journey to becoming an Uber Eats Driver. This is perhaps the most important of all. You have to pass a background check. There is an app Uber Eats uses called Checkr. They use the app to do a background check on their drivers. You have to pass a background check to get approved. You will also get checked every 2 years into your appointment to stay an Uber Eats Driver. The checks are to make sure drivers are not child molesters, violent criminals, thieves, and felons.

  • Uber Eats Vehicle Requirements

Besides the driver requirements you have to pass, there are also some vehicle requirements. Your vehicle must not be more than 15 years old. It must also have four doors. It should also be able to transport at least four passengers at once

It is very important that your car looks good on the outside. No scratched paint, dented bodywork, or cracked fenders. Also, there can’t be any branding decals on the car.

There is also no room for rental cars. Unless the rental car is rented from Uber. Uber maintains a fleet of vehicles for drivers that cannot afford one. After your car has been checked and has passed all necessary requirements, there is still a final requirement. You must have an insurance policy taken out in your name.

For those that want to deliver using scooters, there is a different set of requirements. The scooter must have 2 wheels and a 50cc motor or less. It must also travel less than 30 mph. It should be covered under some form of insurance, the same as cars.

For those that would prefer to deliver using bikes, there are no requirements here. Both cosmetic and insurance wise. Of course, the bicycle must be un-motorized and have only 2 wheels.

Once you are sure that you have all the requirements outlined above in the bag, you can go ahead to apply. Go to the Uber Eats website and create an account. You will be asked some basic information including your name, phone number, address and email. You will then submit the documents listed above. This includes your driver’s license, insurance, and vehicle registration.

There is a waiting period of 48 hours while Uber performs the background check and makes sure your documents are in order. If approved, you get your username and password via email and you are ready to go. You can login and start driving immediately!

Switching To Uber Eats from Uber

Do you already drive for Uber? Switching to Uber Eats from Uber is very easy. The vehicle and driver requirements are the same on both platforms. Since you are already driving for Uber, it means you have passed all the requirements. To switch over, open the app and scroll to the option that states “get more requests by switching to delivery.” When it is opened, click on the option “Yes. I want to do delivery!” At this point, you are almost there, just follow the prompts.

Once you are done, you will be able to receive ride requests and delivery request right from the same Uber app. Remember, you have the freedom to work as much or as little as you want. Now that you have the choice of both Uber apps, you can choose which one you want to receive requests from.

Uber is definitely not joking around. They are focused on dominating the transportation sector and all secondary industries around it. They have been at the forefront of innovation in the sector since they made their entrance years ago. Uber eats is one step further in their quest for dominance. Uber drivers already numbering about 3.9 million worldwide. It is not too much of a stretch that Uber Eats has grown so quickly.

You can also earn up to $100 per shift if you put in the work. You can even cash out the money every day, no need to wait for a paycheck, its freedom all the way. On the downside, your car could get quite a beating due to the frequent use. It is also likely that you will be working on holidays and weekends.
